2026 Rate Adjustment: What You Need to Know

At Chariton Valley Electric Cooperative, we are committed to providing reliable, affordable electricity to our members. After careful consideration, the Board of Directors has approved a rate adjustment that will take effect on the May bill.

Why Are Rates Increasing?

Orange Question Mark

Why Are Rates Increasing?

To continue providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity, a rate adjustment is necessary to keep pace with the rising costs of operating and maintaining the electric system. Several key factors have contributed to this decision:

  • Maintaining System Reliability – Ongoing maintenance, repairs and replacement of aging equipment are essential to ensure dependable service and prevent outages.

  • Rising Material & Equipment Costs – The cost of poles, wire, transformers and other critical equipment has increased, making system maintenance and improvements more expensive.

  • Increasing Operational Expenses – Inflation has impacted the cost of labor, fuel and day-to-day operations required to safely deliver electricity to members.
  • Long-Term System Investments – Continued investment in infrastructure helps extend the life of equipment and ensures the cooperative can meet members’ needs now and in the future.

As a not-for-profit cooperative, these adjustments allow CVEC to recover only the costs necessary to operate and maintain the electric system while continuing to provide reliable service to our members.

How Will This Affect You

How Will This Affect You

We understand that any change in rates can impact household and business budgets. To help you better understand the effects, here’s a general breakdown of the adjustments:

Rate Category Current Rate New Rate
Residential (per kWh) $0.115/kWh $0.118/kWh
Small Commercial (per kWh) $0.115/kWh $0.118/kWh
Large Commercial (per kW) $17.51/kW $17.04/kW

For a typical residential member using 900 kWh per month, this adjustment will result in an increase of approximately $2.70 per month.

Additional Rate Information

Service Availability Charge

The Service Availability Charge covers the basic daily cost for availability of service at your location.  It accounts for a majority of the cooperative’s investment in poles, wires, transformers, meters and the maintenance required to deliver safe and reliable service to your residence or business 24/7, 365 days a year.

Energy Charge

The Energy Charge is calculated based on the metered kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed during the billing period. The energy used to calculate this charge is also know as a member's usage.

Demand Charge

This charge applies to members who use larger amounts of electricity at any one time, typically businesses or large energy users. It is based on the highest level of electricity demand (measured in kilowatts, kW) recorded during the billing period. The demand charge helps cover the cost of maintaining enough capacity on the system to serve peak electricity needs, ensuring reliability for all members.
